In some parts of the United States and Canada, it is associated with mischief and pranks. Alex Miller tells Castanet that the day was popular where he grew up in Ontario, so he started the tradition here in Kelowna, and it’s starting to catch on. “This all started, must have been about three years ago. My friend was going to teach his daughters about devil’s night. He didn’t want them taking toilet paper to random people’s houses. So he picked some of his good friends to do pranks , and our house was one of those houses,” Miller said. Since then, more and more neighborhood friends have been joining in on the fun, “it’s been a little steamy. And this year, we all got together and took some toilet paper to a few houses and put toilet paper on them. and had a good laugh with our friends.” Instead of being upset, Miller says it’s quite the opposite “I don’t know how many of these neighborhood Facebook groups you’re in, but it’s 50% people complaining about kids doing stupid things and 50% people complaining about coyotes. That’s how we thought we’d do it… I’m kidding. I’m not I’m not upset at all. I paid for the toilet paper and took the kids from house to house,” says Miller. While he was out on the toilet papering his friend’s houses, they were busy returning the favor. “We came home and Kevin and his girls made our house.” Miller says neighborhood pranks escalate and this morning one of the neighbors picked up all the leaves from the yard and put all the leaves on a neighbor’s porch. He’s made a lot of enemies over the years with his toilet paper, so…” He says the pranks are getting more complicated every year, “we hit seven different houses last night, so we’ll probably have more payback next year.”
