Post-match interviews Mo Salah “I always try to have a good first contact because it puts me in a better position [to score], and luckily I did today. Hopefully this is a turning point. We don’t like to lose but it’s football and we have to accept it. Hopefully this week will give us more confidence.” Andy Robertson “We knew if they went three back that Trent and I would have a lot of space and it was up to us to take advantage of that. We got these boys in front of the ball and they worked magic. “It was a real professional performance in the second half – we dug deep and defended well. We could have been better on the ball, but it was always going to be more in our face, and we stood up to that. I thought the two center backs were incredible. First half we played well with the ball, second half we played well without the ball.” “A bit disappointing, I had the chances to at least tie the game,” says Yash Gupta. “Still in the top four and all the competitions that go to the World Cup. After that, more performances like second halves this season and good things will happen.” This was a game of two separate 45 minute halves. Liverpool dominated the first half and won it 2-0. Spurs were even more dominant in the second half but only managed to win it 1-0. All three goals were expertly scored – two for Mo Salah and one for Harry Kane. It’s a big win for Liverpool, especially after those defeats to Nottingham Forest and Leeds. They move up to eighth, seven points behind fourth-placed Spurs with a game in hand. Spurs have now lost three of their last four league games and four of their last seven. See what happens, Larry, if you keep conceding the first goal?
Final: Tottenham 1-2 Liverpool
It’s November 6th and Liverpool have finally won the Premier League away from home. 90+3 mins Lucas Moura appeals for a penalty, I don’t know why. Play continues and Allison clears well under pressure from Kane. The ball falls to Perisic, who curls a difficult volley over the bar. No penalty. Thiago risked a boot near Moura’s face but, as with Alexander-Arnold’s push in the first half, you couldn’t say it was clear and obvious. 90+2 mins Spurs were fantastic in the second half. If they played like that for an hour they would be dangerous, never mind 90 minutes. Liverpool bring in Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain for (potential) match-winner Mo Salah. 90+1 minute Perisic’s corner is cleared well by Gomez. Spurs come again and Doherty’s header in the area is cleared by Bentancur by Jones. This was an important touch. 90 minutes Konate heads back for another Spurs corner. There will be four minutes of added time. 89 minutes: Chance for Spurs! How did he stay out?! Perisic’s cross from the left was cleverly cleared by Kane, bent wide of goal, and the leaping Bentancur failed to reach the far post. The ball swerved a yard or two from goal. So close for Tottenham! Photo: Andrew Couldridge/Action Images/Reuters Updated at 18:24 GMT 88 min Kulusevski slips Thiago, as he did for the goal, and almost slips a pass to Kane in the area. One of the Liverpool defenders stretched to make the save. Lucas Moura is for Yves Bishouma. 87 min Liverpool bring on Joe Gomez to replace Darwin Nunez, which obviously means a change to 5-4-1. 86 min Kulusevski’s very deep cross – Spurs love them – is headed back by Perisic and cleared by a combination of Alexander-Arnold and Konate. 85 min Perisic’s cross is cleared by Alisson in the split second before being tapped in by Doherty. Alisson goes down when the ball goes out of play, prompting some boos from the Spurs fans. It’s okay for him to continue. 83 min Dier’s cross towards Bentancur’s goal, and Alisson gets to his right to make a comfortable save. 82 min Nunez hits the post after a great disguised pass from Thiago but it was partially offside so it wouldn’t count. 81 min Fabinho is lucky not to give away a foul when he fouls Hojbjerg in the D. Liverpool are really struggling to get away. 79 minute: Opportunity for Lenglet! The tireless Perisic runs past Alexander-Arnold to win another corner for Spurs. He takes it himself and Lenglet heads over the bar from six yards! He arrived late, got in front of Nunes, but couldn’t keep his head down. Ah, is this the chance for Spurs? Photo: Mike Hewitt/Getty Images Updated at 18:19 GMT 77 min Kulusevski and Doherty have been excellent since coming on. I’m surprised Doherty isn’t playing more ahead of Emerson Royal, especially after the way last season ended. And Kulusevski is just class: so elegant and great in tight spaces. 75 min Spurs fail to appeal for a penalty after a tussle between Kane and Conate on the edge of the penalty area. If it was a foul – and you can argue it either way – I’m sure it was just outside the area. Updated at 18.02 GMT 74′ Two changes for Liverpool. Curtis Jones and Jordan Henderson replace Roberto Firmino and Harvey Elliott. 72 min The atmosphere is spectacular and Spurs are all over Liverpool. 71 mins Antonio Conte booked after kick-off with one of Liverpool’s backroom staff, Pep Linders I think. Antonio Conte is overtired (probably). Photo: Andrew Couldridge/Action Images/Reuters Updated at 18:05 GMT Spurs are back at it. Doherty played a short pass to Kuluszewski just outside the area in the inside right channel. He pulled Thiago towards him, then moved away and produced a neat pass down the side of the defense to Kane. He got to the ball just before Konate and produced an excellent finish past Alisson. TARGET! Spurs 1-2 Liverpool (Kane 70)
Goal directly by Kulusevski! The Spurs are back! Photo: David Klein/Reuters Updated at 17:59 GMT 68 minutes Double change for Spurs. Matt Doherty replaces Emerson Royal and there are huge cheers as Dejan Kulusevski comes on for Ryan Sessegnon. This means that Perisic will move to left wing back. 68 min What a smart effort from Kane. Perisic curled a free-kick from the left towards the near post where Kane headed across goal from around 15 yards. He beat the flying Allison and narrowly curled wide from the far post. 65 min Liverpool keep the ball alive after a corner. Alexander-Arnold curls a wonderful straight pass over Kane’s head but Salah can’t control it in the air. It was not an easy ball. but if he had, it would have been for the hat-trick. Since you asked about it: England, it’s pretty simple – use Alexander-Arnold solely as an impact if you’re a game behind. You’re welcome, Gareth. Updated at 17:54 GMT 64 min Bentancur’s deep cross is deflected away by Sessegnon from the backfoot Kane. This was a much better chance for Sessegnon, and all Kane could do was head it towards the touchline after leaping back. 63 min Thiago whistles a long shot wide of the near post. Lucas Moura is set to join Spurs. Thiago Alcantara has a long range ping. Photo: Andrew Powell/Liverpool FC/Getty Images Updated at 17:54 GMT 61 min “Following the comments about replacing Conte, a reminder that before appointing Nuno, Spurs interviewed and rejected Potter and Ten Haag!” says James Hopkins. “The frustration is that Conte has a formation and a way of playing, and he separates the players he has in that formation. It’s always the same with Conte – if he fails it’s always because he hasn’t been given enough good players, not because he’s failed to make the most of what the club has got.” I can understand the complaints about the playstyle, even if I don’t necessarily agree with them. But surely he has gone above and beyond – pure results – with every team he has managed? OK, maybe not Arezzo (the first time). Or Atalanta. Updated at 17:49 GMT 60 mins Salah gets on goal and is about to shoot when Lenglet (I think) makes a vital tackle. The flag went up after that but it looked very tight on the replay. 59 min And now Bedancourt heads the cross after finding himself in a good position on the right of the area. 58 mins Just realized Liverpool have switched to a 4-4-2, with Elliott and Nunez on the wings and Salah and Firmino up front. 57 min Nunez cuts in from the left, goes past Emerson Royal, but then deflects his shot past Lloris on the edge of the area. Spurs break, but Emerson Royal crosses out for a corner, prompting jeers and groans from the home fans. 55 mins Alisson places the ball and Kane tackles it. The ball could have gone anywhere but luckily for Liverpool it ran towards Konate. Suddenly Liverpool look nervous at the back. 54 mins Salah misses a decent chance to complete his hat-trick, calmly firing past Lloris from 14 yards after unselfish play from Nunez. 53 min “Spurs would be mad to lose Conte…” says Chris Walton. “He dragged them into the table and into the last 16 of the Champions League. He is a born winner.” Updated at 17:40 GMT 52 mins “Of all the things to call Nunez, Andy Carroll is pretty inaccurate,” says Niall Mullen. “I think you always knew the kind of stuff you were going to get from big Andy. With Nunez I don’t know what he will try: dribble the defender like Suarez, try to beat one like Lewandowski, run back like Salah or fall to his feet like me.” 51 min Kane lays the ball back to Sessegnon, who curls a right-footed curler not far from the edge of the box. 51 min WHY DON’T THEY JUST START GAMES LIKE THIS? Photo: Catherine Ivill/Getty Images Updated at 17:47 GMT 50 mins Dier’s errant cross almost secretly…
