King’s, an affiliate college of Western University, said its community was mourning the loss of the two students from China, who were in their first year of social sciences. “King’s and Western University International have been in contact with the families of those involved in the conflict. we are working closely with them, and the injured students, offering all the support we can at this very difficult time,” King’s said in a press release. King’s said it was not releasing the names of students who died or were injured “out of respect for the families”. “We are sorry for the loss of these young lives,” King President David Malloy said. “This is a great shock and tragedy for King’s and the wider Western University community. These were people committed to studying in Canada.”

King’s is working with the Canadian government to ensure families can travel from China to Canada as soon as possible, Malloy said. The four students were traveling in the minivan on a private field trip they planned during fall reading week that began Monday, the school said. Three passengers were taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries and two of them later died, police said. Two other occupants of the minivan and the driver of the truck were taken to hospital with serious injuries, police said, adding that the driver of the minivan was treated at the scene for minor injuries. “We are doing everything we can to support the injured students in hospital,” King’s said, adding that one student is in serious condition and another has minor injuries. The college has lowered its flags and is offering counseling services to students, faculty and staff who need support. A section of the 401 Freeway was closed for six hours Monday.
