Const. Tzu-Hsin Shaelyn Yang was a shining light whose concern for others made those around her better and more compassionate, mourners at the slain police officer’s funeral heard Wednesday, Nov. 2, at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Yang was 31 and had been on the force in Burnaby for almost three years when she was murdered on the morning of Oct. 18 while working for the Burnaby RCMP’s mental health and homelessness outreach team.

Yang and a city worker were on their way to a tent in Broadview Park off Canada Way to serve an eviction notice when she was stabbed to death. We apologize, but this video failed to load. Jongwon Ham, 37, has been charged with first-degree murder in her death. Yang had managed to shoot him before he died and required surgery. Tan said his cousin maintained her optimistic outlook despite the struggles and adversities she faced every day at work. “She only became warmer and kinder,” Tan said. “Shae faced everything in life with a laugh and a smile, with an open heart and the world was all the brighter for her. “Yes, it’s colder without her here, but we’re all human, we all share her capacity for compassion and strength and belief in a tomorrow that’s better than today. “The choice we make, it matters what we believe.” Scenes from the funeral of Burnaby RCMP Constable Shaelyn Yangin Richmond, BC on November 2, 2022. Young had struggled with loneliness while at cadet school at the RCMP depot in Regina, and her wife Simone flew to the Saskatchewan capital every two weeks to be with her.

Young never drew attention to herself, mourners said. He loved the rain. She began practicing marshalling arts as a young lady and excelled in many other sports. She was head over heels in love with the puppy, Barbara, that she and Simone had adopted. Before becoming an officer, Young was a full-time volunteer with the RCMP victim services unit in Richmond and did extensive work for the BC Cancer Service.
