The health unit, local hospitals and pharmacists issued a joint statement on Thursday. “Compared to previous years, the seasonal flu virus is spreading more quickly and aggressively and our vaccination rates against COVID-19 continue to lag behind the provincial average. These factors add up to systemic pressures that continue to weigh on our institutional capacity,” the press release said. “As we enter flu season and continue to face illnesses and hospitalizations associated with COVID-19, the importance of taking preventative measures against the spread of these diseases cannot be overstated.” Health leaders said they see the impact of these diseases on the local health care system on a daily basis. “Our teams are working incredibly hard to care for patients and protect everyone’s health – but we need your help,” the statement continued. Residents are asked to be aware of COVID-19 vaccinations and the annual flu shot as simple and effective ways to limit the spread of COVID-19 and flu to ensure that emergency services, hospitals, centers urgent care and other health care organizations continue to be responsive and efficient when you need them. The flu vaccine is now available for Ontarians six months of age and older through pharmacies and health care providers. More information about the flu and this vaccine can be found at wechu.org/flu. For most people over the age of five, this vaccine can be given at the same time as the next COVID-19 vaccine. For more information about COVID-19 vaccines or to find a clinic, visit www.wevax.ca.
