Windows of a nearby school were smashed and bricks hurled at passing vehicles after the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service responded to calls from Beauly Square just after 5.30pm. Videos from nearby Keswick Terrace, Balgowan Avenue and several other streets circulating on social media showed flames raging and charred debris on the side of the road. Others show officers holding riot shields dodging fireworks, while another shows the force’s deployed helicopter with its searchlight scanning the streets below. The windows of St Paul’s academy were broken. It is not clear why the disturbance started, but it is believed to have continued well into the night. Police Scotland confirmed they were responding to an incident but gave no further details. An image, obtained by STV News, shows the windows of St Paul’s Academy badly damaged with officers guarding the premises. The leader of Dundee City Council called the scenes “absolutely disgusting” and “like something out of a war-torn nation”. In a Facebook post, cllr John Alexander added: “This is not just a small fire. Blocking roads with burning bins, smashing cars and damaging our schools are scenes you’d expect in an action movie or a war-torn country. Dozens of police officers responded to the incident, while the police helicopter was also deployed. “I’m shocked, but more than that, I’m angry. This reckless behavior is putting lives at risk as emergency vehicles cannot get through Balgowan Avenue and is costing residents and every taxpayer money. “I hope that each of these individuals responsible will be identified and dealt with appropriately. Given the age of many of them in the videos and pictures (I assume), I expect parents would be equally outraged and questioning their children if they knew they were out in that area tonight. “Where were your kids tonight? Please ask them.”
